General Tips

• If the fabric you are using for your background frays easily, we suggest cutting the background larger than is required and trimming it to size when embroidery is complete – saves a lot of distress during the most enjoyable part of the project – sitting quietly, needle and thread in hand just stitching to your heart’s content!

• Use craft scissors for cutting paper and fusible webbing and keep your fabric scissors sharp for their own purpose.

• We find it best to work the embroidery stage of projects in an embroidery hoop, starting from the centre of the design and working outwards.  Having two or more hoop sizes is also handy to accommodate more intricate patterns as well as the larger ones.  When using an embroidery hoop, remove your stitchery from the hoop when you are not working on it to prevent permanent stretching of the fabric.

• A Walking Foot on your sewing machine makes attaching binding easier!

• If you are using a water erasable pen, do not leave the design work in direct sunlight or hot/humid conditions before finishing your stitchery as the heat may set the ink and the humidity will cause the design to rapidly fade.  Also, after your stitchery is complete, remove the pen marks with cold water before pressing with an iron, or they could become permanent.

• Backing your stitchery with pellon or embroidery stabiliser before stitching, prevents the threads from showing through to the front of light coloured fabric and gives the stitchery a quilted look.  Pellon can be purchased in a number of different weights.

• When separating stranded embroidery cotton ready for stitching, pull one strand out at a time to prevent them from knotting.

• Cushions are filled better if the insert is slightly larger than the cushion cover.
