Commencing business in October 2003, our business name, “Heart of Gold Creations” - Designs to Lift Your Spirits - is dedicated to our much loved Grandmother and comes from a note in a diary (of sorts) which was written by her, and found after she passed away from cancer in 1993. She had written about her various grandchildren, their ups and downs professionally and personally, and about her grand-daughter Marieann, who she wrote “has a heart of gold”. Both shared a love of craft work.
Over the years Marieann developed skills in sewing, knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, patchwork and quilting. I cannot recall a time when my sister was not working on a craft project for herself, or as was mostly the case, for friends and family – this, in between a busy schedule working as a Registered Nurse. Our mother further influenced us through her love of knitting, creating beautiful jumpers, cardigans and children’s toys. Even Dad became involved in our “secret women’s business”, helping to tie bow ties on teddy bears.
Through visits to every Patchwork, Quilting and Craft Shop on the planet (OK, slight exaggeration), often finding myself there through the ulterior motives of my sister, I’ve gradually become knowledgeable in all the terms related to the various crafts. I now know exactly what “fat quarter” means and what a “charm pack” is! (and the fabric ranges are incredible!!!)
While I have “had a go” at crocheting and sewing over the years, my interest lay more in the area of designing. I’ve come up with all sorts of ideas that have had my sister’s eyes rolling and me pushing for the ideas to become reality. “Why don’t you do it yourself” was the usual response, but my expertise is in business organisation/administration and my sister’s is in creating the designs I’ve come up with. So….. here we are today, having formed a business partnership, combining our skills and abilities, to share our creations with others. We also have inherited a deep love of nature and gardening from our forebears and many of our designs do, and will reflect this.
In memory of our Grandmother, and as a result of the lack of “in-home” palliative care support we encountered during her illness, we are committed to giving 10% of all profits from our business to community palliative care services. We hope that this will help towards the provision of care and support for patients (and their families), who choose to stay at home for as long as possible.
We hope you enjoy our designs, can see how they might be enhanced to suit your preference and would love to see your end results also.
With our very best wishes,
Andrea & Marieann.
